Husnicioara landslide investigation

Students will make observations and write a report of a complex landslide which occurred in May 2016 and has destroyed the infrastructure in an area where under embankment are old mine galleries from Husnicioara Coal Mine (on a distance of 500-600 m has been a collapse with difference of up to 20 m and a horizontal landslide, affecting the entire platform of the road and adjoining land).

  1. THEORETICAL approach

Scientific information about Husnicioara landslide and practical details regarding the field investigation (presentation, causes (geological, human, etc...), triggers,  methods of investigation,  working steps, field notes, how to record observations, content of  field investigation report)

Trip to Iron Gates Natural Park 

  • Visit the “Center of growth in captivity of Hermann's Tortoise”  Eselnita,

Part of Center of Environmental Reasearch and Impact Studies, University of Bucharest.

The  Hermann's Tortoise is a protected species  in our country, being threatened due to the decrease of the individuals’ number and the habitats’ destruction.

  • Ranger-guided hike on limestone plateau Ciucaru Mare from the Great Boilers.

Ciucaru Mare Hill (318 m) is the most representative form of relief with a vertical cliff which marks off the Danube river.  

The ecotouristic route follows mountain paths that go through meadows and forests of oak or beech. From the belvedere points, made up of limestone rocks, we can admire the Great Gorges and Veliki Strbac, on the Serbian side of the Danube.

Time: 2 h.    Difficulty - easy.

  • Outdoor education activity -  The biodiversity in the Natural Reserve Great Gorges, identifying the native plant species and invasive species

The Iron Gates Natural Park - a true open-air geological museum

 

  • A motorboat cruise in the Great and Small Boilers (Cazanele Mari si Cazanele Mici) (40 lei /person, teacher or student)

  • Veterani cave

  • Rock sculpture of Dacian King, Decebal -  unique in Europe, the highest on the continent (55 m high, 25 m wide) by 8 meters taller than the monument of Christ in Rio de Janeiro.

  • Mraconia Monastery
